You'll see pink ribbons a lot for the next 31 days because October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary. When you shop for groceries, you will notice that supermarket chains and food companies are sponsoring promotions that benefit various cancer research and support groups.
Many studies have linked body weight to breast cancer risk. Being overweight increases the risk of breast cancer by 30% to 60% in post-menopausal women. (Before menopause, being overweight appears to decrease a woman's risk of getting breast cancer.)
In any case, experts recommend avoiding weight gain. Eating ample amounts of fiber every day makes you feel full, so you won't overeat.
This month, eat well and support breast-cancer initiatives. | |
