A Day For Father, A Month For All Men

For one day this month, we honor dads. Father's Day is Sunday, June 20. But all men receive special attention in June, especially as it relates to their health. June is Men's Health Month, an event promoted by the Men's Health Network.

A little gland, the prostate, looms large in men's health. The prostate is a walnut-sized structure just below the bladder. Its primary function is to produce some of the fluid that makes up semen.

Problems include an enlarged prostate, an inflamed prostate (prostatitis) and a cancerous prostate. Though doctors recommend early detection, many men tend to avoid a digital exam because they are uncomfortable with the idea of it. To perform the exam, a doctor inserts a gloved finger in the patient's anus and feels for abnormalities. It takes about 10 seconds.

Author Kim Garretson sees humor in men's reluctance to talk about their prostate. Check out his posters, which resemble the covers of old pulp fiction novels or posters for B movies. You'll forward the link to your friends.

Speaking of the exam, former tennis great John McEnroe said, "I think it's the ultimate 'better safe than sorry'" test. On Father's Day, Major League Baseball will raise awareness of prostate health. Players, managers, umpires and others will wear blue to show their support. The home team will sport a special blue ribbon logo on batting helmets.

Keeping the prostate healthy is as simple as eating a proper diet, avoiding fatty foods, exercising regularly and limiting caffeine and alcohol.
