Probiotics Are Bacteria That Are Good For You

The human body contains billions of bacteria and other microorganisms. Probiotics are foods or supplements with so-called "good" or "friendly" bacteria that are similar to those found naturally in the human gut. Interest in probiotics has been growing; spending on probiotic supplements nearly tripled from 1994 to 2003. You can find probiotics in some foods, including yogurt, miso, tempeh, and juices.

Probiotics support general wellness, and there is evidence they are effective at treating diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, urinary tract infections and other conditions, such as eczema in children. Probiotics are believed to reduce the recurrence of bladder cancer.

The federal government's National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) says there is some evidence supporting the use of probiotics. NCCAM is funding research on the subject at universities and schools of public health. If you are thinking about using a probiotic product as complementary or alternative medicine, NCCAM advises that you consult your healthcare provider first. Learn more at NCCAM's website.
